The Allen-Bradley 1771-AF is a Fiber-Optic converter module. The module converts electrical signals (twinaxial) to optical signals for transmission over the fiber optic cable. When the fiber-optic signals reach the destination, the 1771-AF converts them back to their original electrical signals. The module is made to be mounted on the 1771 I/O chassis where it is allocated a single slot. The module consumes a current of 600mA at 5V DC from the backplane. When in operation, the 1771-AF has a heat dissipation rating of 3W.

 

Through its point-to-point configuration, the 1771-AF can transmit signals over a distance of 6562 feet when using a fiber-optic cable with a rating of 100/140µm. To achieve a longer transmission distance of close to 43,000 feet, a 100/140µm fiber-optic cable should be combined with the twinaxial cable. The 1771-AF must be stored at temperatures between -40 and 85 degrees Celsius and operated at temperatures between 0 and 60 degrees Celsius. The humidity rating for the 1771-AF is 5-95% without condensation.

 

The 1771-AF has an optical receiver sensitivity of -24dBm at a distance of 3 feet on 100/140µm cable. It has an 820nm optical wavelength. To connect the 1771-AF, an SMA-905 fiber-optic cable connector is required. The module requires a minimum bandwidth of 17MHz per kilometer. The 1771-AF has cable loss guidelines which were specified during manufacture and which must not exceed 1dB. The module has a transmitter power (optical) of -21dBm at a 3-foot distance on the 50/125um fiber-optic cable or a -16.1dBm on the 62.5/125µm fiber-optic cable. The optical transmitter power reaches a minimum of -5.6dBm for every 3 feet when using the 200/230µm fiber-optic cable.
