The Allen Bradley 1771-DXPS is a control coprocessor in the 1771 control coprocessor family. The 1771-DXPS is located in the 1771 Input Output chassis where it is directly connected to a PLC-5 controller which can be programmed. It can also be installed remotely and standalone. It accommodates an expander module with a 7-bit reception plus an even parity. For communication, the 1771-DXPS has a 25-pin COMM2 & COMM3, and a 9-pin COMM1 ports. Additionally, it supports communication through the Ethernet port which has a communication rate of 10Mbps. The communication ports for this control coprocessor is optically isolated. The 1771-DXPS supports serial communication which is comparable with the RS-232C, RS-423, RS-485 and RS-422A standards.

The communication rates provided by the COMM1 COMM2, and COMM3 for the 1771-DXPS are between 110 and 38.4 Kbps. For error detection, the 1771-DXPS uses a 500 mA current to which is a relay signal from the switch at a resistive 30 Volts AC/DC. The main processor relays information to the 1771-DXPS and is displayed in an ASCII format. When keying the expander module on the main module, use pins 24 and 26 or 30 and 32. On the expander module, the upper C connector is keyed on pins 16 to 18 and the lower D connector is keyed on pins between 2 to 4 or 16 to 18. The 1771-DXPS is extremely sensitive to electrostatic fields, therefore, a grounding wrist wrap should be used when installing the module to avoiding damaging its circuitry and other semiconductors. The 1771 Input Output chassis should be properly grounded to counter the harmful effects of ESD.
