The Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation 1771-VHSCK is a high-speed counter module with 12 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs. The 1771-VHSCK is a PLC5 module has 3 digital inputs per counter. Also, the 1771-VHSCK module has a backplane current of 0.65 Amps and module update period of 100 milliseconds. This stunning advanced industrial module is intended for interfacing signals with either Block transfer or PLC capability and for performing high-speed counting for different applications and it only needs a single I/O slot on the 1771 system. The 1771-VHSCK module has a maximum input frequency of 1 Megahertz when in counter mode and it does not need an external power source. The module has a typical AC signal delay (off) of 29 (+/- 8) milliseconds and a typical DC signal delay (off) of 30 (+/- 7) milliseconds. The Allen-Bradley module has an input voltage rating of 5 Volts DC/12 to 24 Volts DC (selectable) and a 7 milliamps input current at 5 Volts DC and 7 to 15 milliamps at 12 to 24 Volts DC.

The module requires a minimum input amperage of 4 milliamps and an output leakage current of 10 micro Amps at 24 Volts DC. The 1771-VHSCK module incorporates 4 different operational modes in Counter mode, Encoder mode, Continuous/Rate mode, and Period/Rate mode, each on a separately-configured input channel. The module’s maximum count value which can be programmed is between 0 and 999,999. The Counter mode is used when the user needs the module to read incoming pulses from single-ended or differential encoders (a maximum of 4 can be supported), pulse generators, other counters, and different mechanical switches. After the pulses are read, the module returns the data to the PLC processor in the form of binary or BCD numbers. On the other hand, the Encoder mode enables users to read and return quadrature pulses to the PLC processor. The Period/Rate mode determines the input pulses’ frequency through counting the number of internal 4-megahertz clock pulses over the number of the input signal pulses specified by the users, and the Rate/Measurement mode is used for counting incoming pulses for a time interval specified by the users. The approximate sizes of the module include a width of 114.3 millimeters (4.5 inches), a height of 314.9 millimeters (12.4 inches) and a depth of 160 millimeters (6.3 inches).
