The Allen-Bradley 1746-HSTP1 is a single-axis Stepper Control Module of the SLC 500 product family that is compatible with any SLC 500 processor.  This module is a motion control module which can be configured through the SLC backplane to program motion in either direction for over 8 million counts of absolute position. An incremental encoder can also be used with the module if desired to verify the position that is reached by the axis. The 1746-HSTP1 has three operation modes: configuration, command, and diagnostic.  The configuration mode defines the module’s basic operations. The command mode allows the processor to issue commands to activate various actions including absolute moves, relative moves, jogging operations, resume moves, reset errors and more.  The diagnostic mode allows for system testing to identify possible cases of electrical noise.

The 1746-HSTP1 features five LED indicators on the front panel to diagnose operational errors. These indicators are RUN (system running), CCW (commanding counterclockwise move), CW (commanding clockwise motion), ERR (error), FLT (no configuration file present/invalid configuration).  The module also features I/O terminals which supply power to the module and outputs to attached devices.  It has an update time of 4 ms.  Maximum input frequency for the 1746-HSTP1 is 250 kHz. Additionally, the module provides up to 250 kHz by pulse train output for micro-stepping applications. The module is equipped with loop back diagnostics to monitor the pulse train commands. Backplane current for the module at 5V is 200 mA and at 24V is 90 mA. Thermal dissipation minimum and maximum for the 1746-HSTP1 is 1.50 W. When wiring the system make sure to use 60/75°C copper wire. Also, make sure to tighten the terminals to 5lb/in.
