The 1203 Communication Modules are manufactured by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation as industrial interface devices. The 1203 Communication Modules can provide a direct and digital communication link devices that are serial communications devices and any industrial device that supports SCANport. The Allen-Bradley devices that support SCANport include the 1305, SMP3, 1336 FORCE, and 1336 PLUS series devices and they connect to the 1203 Communication Modules through their SCANport ports. These communication modules are available both as open-style devices with no enclosure and with protective enclosures. The open-style modules are made to mount directly inside of drives that are large enough to accommodate them. The modules with protective enclosures can be installed on their own and used independently with any compatible drive.
The Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation 1203 Communication Modules that have enclosures have an environmental protection rating of IP 30, which means that they are safe from a variety of common industrial environmental hazards, but not all, and they are not 100% waterproof. A complete control system that includes 1203 Communication Modules also includes a PLC or programmable logic controller, a micro drive, a compatible PC, and an SLC in addition to at least 1 drive and at least one 1203 Communication Module. The 1203 Communication Modules come with DIP switches that can be used to power them on and off and to configure them and change their settings. The switches can be set or reset with blunt pointed instruments like ballpoint pens, but not with pencils because the lead or graphite can damage the DIP switches and render the communication module unusable.
