The Allen Bradley/Rockwell Automation 1756-L55M23 controller is actually a compact processor module from the Logix5000 family of products which offers many control functionalities, safety features, communication capabilities, and improved I/O. The use of such a controller is completely modular so the users can modify it and adapt it towards its needs and requirements, while avoiding unnecessary costs for training and engineering. The 1756 ControlLogix controllers can be used for various I/O points and it fits any slot on the ControlLogix I/O chassis. In addition, the users have the possibility and option to install several controllers in the same chassis if the need arises. The 1756-L55M23 ControlLogix controller operates so that it can be used for different applications which include monitoring and controlling I/O throughout the whole ControlLogix backplane and also over links for networking. The controller has a backplane current of 1.23 Amps for 5 Volts DC input voltage and a backplane current of 14 mA for 24 Volts DC input voltage. Also, the controller features 128,000 maximum I/O and 4,000 input/2,000 output of maximum analog I/O. The program scan time of the 1756-L55M23 controller is at 0.08 milliseconds. The controller weighs only 0.35 kilograms or 0.78 pounds and it operates within a temperature range of 0 to 60 degrees Celsius (32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit). Also, the controller is resistant to 10 to 500 Hertz vibration and it can be used at a humidity level from 5 to 95%.
The 1756-L55M23 controller features 1.5 MB of nonvolatile memory for backup, 1.5MB of RAM memory, 1.5 kilobytes of data/logic memory, and 208 kilobytes of I/O memory. The resources of the 1756-L55M23 are distributed through a backplane CPU and a Logix CPU. The backplane CPU of the controller is used mostly for sending and receiving data which provides communication with the I/O, while the Logix CPU deals with application codes and messages that are being executed. The connection between the 1756-L55M23 controller and the workstation or another controller is achieved through the serial port and the controller is connected to the workstation with a standard serial cable. The 1756-L55M23 controller is also able to communicate with other devices that are used within a system. This communication can be accomplished through networks such as ControlNet, EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, and similar networks. It is important to mention that the controller comes with the proprietary RSLinx software which is used for all of the configuration work and the RSLogix 5000 software for programming the path of the controller.
