The Allen-Bradley 1756-L55M24 is a processor module for the ControlLogix systems platform which provides motion, safety, processing, and drive control. This module is also called a controller because of its function in the system, and it is very light, weighing approximately 0.8 pounds (0.36 kilograms). Due to the flexibility of the ControlLogix system, this compact processor can be installed in virtually any slot in the chassis – even if the chassis power is on. Furthermore, the users may choose to install and use more than one processor in the same chassis or in distributed locations. This option makes communication with other networks possible and much easier. The 1756-L55M24 has 3.5 MB of RAM with 3.5 MB nonvolatile memory which enables the use of the module without a battery. When connected to a power line rated at 5 Volts DC, the processor has a backplane current draw of 1.23 Amps, and a backplane current draw of 14 mA at 24 Volts DC. The processor module uses a 1756-BATM battery assembly which is mounted externally, and it includes a 1756BATA lithium battery and a cable which is 1 meter (3.28 feet) long and which is used to connect the housing to the processor.
When it comes to programming languages, the versatile 1756-L55M24 can operate with the SFC (Sequential Function Chart), relay ladder, structured text, and the function block langauges. Communication between the I/O is achieved using an integrated RS-232 serial port, though the users have the ability to choose other communication modules too (such as Ethernet or Remote I/O, for instance). The optimum operating temperature for the 1756-L55M24 ranges between 0 and 60 degrees Celsius (32 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit) with 5 to 95% relative humidity. Although the controller can be installed while the chassis power is on, the users still need to bear in mind that doing so in hazardous locations is extremely dangerous and could lead to an explosion. Hence, the users are advised to remove the system power prior to controller installation or removal.
