The Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 ControlLogix controller belongs to Series A of the programmable automation controllers. Manufactured by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, this controller comes with 2 MB of user storage memory and 0.98 MB of I/O memory. It features an onboard 4-character alphanumeric display to enable easy monitoring of the run-time information as well as the controller diagnostics. The 1756-L71 features an open enclosure type and one USB port with full speed. The 1756-L71 controller supports controller redundancy if it is paired up with a similar controller in the same ControlNet network. The controller has USB port communication which allows for programming, configuration, firmware flashl and on-line edits only. The communication choices that are available are the ControlNet, DeviceNet, Remote I/O Data Highway Plus, EtherNet/IP, 3rd party process, and SynchLink networks.
The 1756-L71 controller is installed in ControlLogix chassis such as the 1756-A10K, 1756-A4K, 1756-A4, 1756-A7K, 1756-A7, 1756-A17, 1756-A10, 1756-A13, 1756-A17K, and the 1756-A13K chassis. The Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 ControlLogix controller comes with a non-compulsory non-volatile memory, an SD card of 1 GB called the 1784-SD1, and this can be upgraded to 2 GB using the 1784-SD2 SD card. It is essential that the SD card remain installed in the 1756-L71 controller because that is where the diagnostic data is saved, and this is the information that Rockwell Automation uses when troubleshooting an issue with the controller. It is best to use Rockwell Automation SD cards since there are many other SD cards which have not been tested for compatibility with the controller. In fact, the use of other SD cards may result in data corruption. The Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 controller ships with 3 different capacitor modules for energy storage, 2 are removable and the non-removable 1756-ESMNRM/1756-ESMNRMK module is used to secure the controller through the prevention of USB connections.
