The 1771-AF1 is a stand-alone fiber-optic converter. The 1771-AF1 is wired through a terminal block and it is powered through an external power source of 5V. The module operates within a temperature range of -25 to +70 degrees Celsius and it has a storage temperature range of -25 to +85 degrees Celsius. For the 1771-AF1, the twinaxial cable should be connected to the terminal block. The 1771-AF1 functions as a repeater and increases the strength of the electrical signals it receives to reach a maximum distance of 30,000 feet.

 

The 1771-AF1 communicates at a rate of 57.6K bits per second and it reaches a communication rate of 115,200 bits per second when using the duplex fiber-optic cable. For easier operation and quicker troubleshooting, the 1771-AF1 has indicators to show the channel and the power status. The module is used in an electronically noisy environment to enhance communication between 2 PLC-5 systems. This is achieved allowing the DH+ and I/O signals to travel in the same fiber-optic cable.

 

The 1771-AF1 fiber optic converter module acts as an encoder and decoder where it converts electrical signals to optical signal to be transmitted through a fiber-optic cable. It also converts the optical signal received back to electrical signals. They are then transmitted through the twinaxial cable. The 1771-AF1 converter module uses a pre-terminated fiber-optic cable and a twinaxial cable with lengths not exceeding 256 feet. At 5V, the 1771-AF1 module draws a current of 1A. A star configuration is used with the 1771-AF1. The module has to be installed in enclosures with the NEMA type 12 rating. When using the 100/140um, the maximum length between 2 fiber-optic modules cannot exceed 6500 feet. A combination of twinaxial and fiber-optic cables cannot exceed a distance of 43,000 ft.
