The Allen-Bradley 1771-IE04 Analog Input Module is an 8-bit module similar to any 1771-IE module but with an identifying code in the –xx format. The 1771-IE04 has a range of 0 to 10V DC. This module measures analog signals at its inputs and converts the data into 3-digit values of BCD (0-255) and these are then transferred to the users’ PC processor. It is a single-slot machine and carries 8 channels, all of which are single-ended and have the same current range. The current range is calibrated from the factory but may be recalibrated. Users will need to select the input range of all 8 channels as a singular unit.

Users may connect up to 8 devices that can sense the variables of temperature, light, pressure, and positioning status. All the inputs should conform to the single voltage current range for which the module has been calibrated. The 1771-IE04 Analog input module can be used with any 1771 I/O structure. Being an 8-bit module means that the number of steps that it takes to divide the voltage or current range is a single part of 256. It requires 400mA from the +5V DC backplane power supply and this should be calculated to the totals of all the other modules in the chassis to avoid supply overload. It would, however, require a separate power supply to protect analog signals from the line transients caused by the switching of power and digital circuits which have no over-voltage protection from the external power supply.

The 1771-IE04 module can monitor all conversions and transmissions of data for errors. It can also monitor the correct levels of the +/-VDC and +5V DC for correct levels. If there is an error, the module would stop data transfer until the error is corrected, then resume processing. Connecting the module is possible in any slot on the I/O chassis and if users want to reduce noise, they may group the analog modules together. Take note to avoid placing them too close to high-voltage modules. Keying for this module can be done between pins 4 and 6; or pins 26 and 28. Use Belden 8761 cables or similar cables for connecting devices to the module’s field wiring arm and always protect the sensitivity of the module by correct shielding. DO NOT CONFUSE the signal return wire with a cable shield wire.
