The Allen Bradley 1771-IK is an encoder/counter module that keeps the input pulses count emanating from quadrature encoders, specific switches, high speed optical beams, and more. The 1771-IK is compatible with 1771 I/O programmable controllers. Instead of using a 5 Volt power supply like the 1771-IJ encoder/counter module, the 1771-IK is powered from a 12 to 24 Volts DC external power supply. For wiring purposes, the module uses the 1771-WB wiring arm. For monitoring and troubleshooting, the 1771-IK has LED indicators on its front side, which show among other things, fault, communication breakdown, initialization process, and power status.
The 1771-IK can be programmed by configuring the switches. Programming the module lets you choose between the counter and encoder options, binary and BCD data formats, single and block transfer. If you choose the encoder mode, programing enables you to choose the count resolution. For a 12 Volt DC power supply, the 1771-IK requires a minimum of 8 Volts (input) while in a 24 Volt DC power supply, the module requires a minimum of 16 Volts (input). The 1771-IK draws a current of 110 mA at 12 Volts DC and 200 mA 24 Volt DC and has less than 50 mV ripple (peak to peak) at both 12 Volts and 24 Volts DC. For keying, pins 6 & 8 or 8 & 22 are used for the left connector while pins 4 & 6 or 32 & 34 are used for the right connector. Whether the 1771-IK is used as an encoder or a counter module, it must be able to sink 10 mA at 12 Volts and 20 mV at 24 Volts. The module has relative humidity rating of 5-95% non-condensing.
