The Allen-Bradley 1771-TCM is the temperature control module which uses a thermocouple-based temperature sensor for the PLC-5 systems it works with. The 1771-TCM module is designed to provide 8 separate loops for temperature control. The module carries out PIC and TAP algorithms for each of the 8 analog inputs. The subsequent output of the 1771-TCM module is processed by the PLC ladder logic before an output is sent via an output module.  The auto-tuning feature of the module is supported. The module needs to be calibrated once every six months. The analog-to-digital resolution offered by the module is 16-bits or 15 bits-plus-sign-bit.

The 1771-TCM can be installed in any slot in the 1771 I/O chassis. The Series A module draws a maximum of 1.1 Amps in a steady-state condition whereas the series B, C, and D modules draw 1.0 Amps. At system startup, the series A module draws 1.5 Amps whereas the series B, C, and D modules draw 1.0 Amps. Two types of cable are available for connecting the module with termination panels: the 1771-NC6 cable (6 feet in length) and the 1771-NC15 cable (15 feet in length). Static discharge precautions should be followed when removing/installing the module or when connecting the module with terminal panels via associated cables. The following thermocouple types are available for different temperature range requirements: Type B for 572 to 3272 degrees Fahrenheit, Type E for -454 to 1822, Type J for -346 to 2192, Type K for -454 to 2502, Type R for -58 to 3214, Type S for -58 to 3214 and Type T for -454 to 752 degrees Fahrenheit. The module supports a thermocouple input from one of the above-mentioned thermocouple types or a ±100 millivolt input for each PID loop. The working temperature range for the 1771-TCM is 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit whereas the storage temperature range is -40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. The module requires 5 to 95% relative humidity for optimal operation. The module weighs 0.8 kilograms.
