The 1785-L40E is an Ethernet PLC-5 Programmable Controller manufactured by Allen-Bradley that belongs to the 1785 series. The 1785-L40E features the 1785-ME64, 1785-ME16, 1785-M100, or the 1785-ME32 backup memory modules for the Allen-Bradley lithium battery. It uses backplane current of 3.6 Amps at 5 Volts DC, and the maximum operational thermal dissipation that this controller can have is 65.00 BTU/hour. The 1785-L40E has an internal circuit clock with an accuracy variation of ± 5 minutes per month, and it can function properly in a temperature of 0 to 60 degrees Celsius (32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit) around a humidity range of 5 to 95% for non-condescending humidity. The controller can withstand an operational shock of 30G with a vibration of 1G in the range of 10 to 500 Hertz. The average weight of the 1785-L40E controller is 1.38 kilograms (3.0 pounds). This controller also features an open enclosure. For communication purposes, this controller uses an Ethernet interface and interconnect cable.

While setting up the 1785-L40E controller, there are a few things that need to be kept in mind. The shipment of the processor of the controller is done in a static-shielded container to guard against any possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. While setting the configuration plugs or switches, ESD can cause damage inside the module. A few things can be done to avoid ESD, such as wearing a properly grounded wrist strap, keep in touch with an approved ground point while installing, and avoiding touching the backplane connector or connector pins. The module should be kept in its static-shielded container when no one is using it. It is not recommended to change the Ethernet configuration jumper default setting, which is set at 802.3. This is the standard configuration. The Allen-Bradley Ethernet PLC-5 controllers, especially the 1785-L40E, provide users with an opportunity to gather the information needed to make informed business decisions, and achieve better performance for and more memory. With better speed features available, this series is one of the best controller series available in the market.
