The Allen-Bradley PLC-5-40C is a 1785 series PLC-5 Programmable Logic Controller. This is a 1785 series PLC-5 model with ControlNet. Potential users can find this part referred to as the 1785-L40C15 module in catalogs. The PLC-5-40C includes an embedded network connection which enables the users to connect it in a cost-effective manner to a wide range of devices. This specific module needs to be configured just once and this feature eliminates the need for block transfer programming. The device should be installed in the left-most slot in 1771 I/O chassis. For their PLC-5 system to work properly users will need to acquire a power supply and I/O modules too.
The RSLogix 5 software supports the Allen-Bradley PLC-5 family of PLCs. Operators will use this software to create their control logic. They can use their PLC program to control various I/O modules and for information and data processing. All of this is managed by ladder logic (or structured text) programming with advanced instructions that include logic, math, diagnostic, shift registers, immediate I/O, and program jump instructions. There is a keyswitch selector on the front panel for users to select the processor mode. For establishing a network connection, there is a ControlNet Network Access Port (NAP). This is a standard RJ45 connector. Leave at least 6 inches of space above and below and 4 inches of space on both sides of your programmable logic controller to allow convection cooling. This type of cooling draws a vertical column of air upward over the processor and maintains the proper ambient temperature (0 to 60 degrees Celsius or 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit). If this type of cooling is not sufficient, then include fans in the automation system. The mechanical protection rating of the device is the IP00.
