The 1746-NT4 is a thermocouple/mV input module from Allen Bradley and is part of the SLC-500 series. It draws a backplane current of 60 mA and 40 mA at 5 and 24 Volts respectively. In addition to a CJC (Cold Junction Compensation) sensor, the 1746-NT4 has 4 thermocouple input types with a +/- 50 to +/- 100 mV voltage range. The 1746-NT4 features a filter frequency of 10 to 250 Hertz and has a step response time of 50 milliseconds at 60 Hertz. The available thermocouple input types are J, K, T, E, R, S, B, and N. It uses raw/proportional, engineering units, engineering units x 10 and scaled-for-PID data formats.


The 1746-NT4 has an auto calibration feature which calibrates the thermocouple module on every channel change or when a channel is enabled. The 1746-NT4 module has a transient 500 Volt DC separation on the inputs and the chassis ground. The overall module update time is dependent on the number of enabled channels and the CJC update duration.


Platinum, nickel, iron-nickel and copper RTDs can be interfaced with this module. It has a 0.80 Watt minimum/maximum thermal dissipation and a 16-bit resolution. When handling the 1746-NT4 make sure to have proper mechanisms in place to take care of electrostatic discharges. This may include wearing a standardized grounding wrist strap and avoiding the backplane connector pins by handling the 1746-NT4 module from the front.


The 1746-NT4 has a channel sampling time per channel of 12 milliseconds at 250 Hertz, 50 milliseconds at 60 Hertz, 60 milliseconds at 50 Hertz, and 300 milliseconds at 10 Hertz. The module also has a CJC update time of 14 milliseconds and is configured by entering the feeding values (bits) into output words 0 to 3 on channels 0 to 3 respectively.
