The Allen-Bradley 1747-L542 is a powerful processor that is compatible with the SLC 500 programmable controller system. The 1747-L542 is one specifically in the family of SLC 5/04 processors. These SLC processors offer a wide range of I/O channels, memory, ports, and instruction sets to facilitate meeting the exact needs of a given application. The SLC 5/04 processors let you select a memory capacity of 16K, 32K, or 64K words. The 1747-L542 itself has up to 32K memory, 4096 ports, and 30 I/O module slots. Additionally, the processor has standard battery-backed RAM with backup flash memory to protect your data.

With the 1747-L542, users can configure up to 4096 ports for input and 4096 ports for output. There is a built in RS‐232‐C communications port and a built in DH+ port for communications with other processors, terminals, and interfaces. The DH+ is up to 3 times faster that its DH-485 counterpart. The 1747-L542 interfaces seamlessly with SLC 500 controllers and has a power load of 1A at 5V DC and 0A at 24V DC.  The 1747-L542 is an affordable yet powerful processor which is compatible with a variety of applications including process controls and material handling.

When installing the 1747-L542, care should be taken to never connect or disconnect any module with the power applied. Electrostatic charges should also be considered as they can damage the on-board memory. The 1747-L542 must be inserted into the left slot (slot 0) on the chassis to function properly. Care should be taken to remove the wrapping before operation to prevent overheating.

The Allen-Bradley 1747-L542 processor is an SLC 500 modular processor which belongs to the SLC 5/04 series. The processor can be programmed through ladder-logic and structured text. The processor comes with a built-in RS-232/422/423 communication port which supports the full-duplex, half duplex, DH-485, ASCII, DF1 radio modem, and Modbus RTU master protocols. The program memory available on the 1747-L542 processor is 32K words. The processor discrete I/O capacity is 4096. The remote I/O capacity is up to 4096 inputs and 4096 outputs.  The maximum number of chassis supported by the processor is 3 and the maximum number of I/O slots supported is 30.
