Rx3i Power Supply affected when portable/mobile radio is activated
Description
Applications where the RX3i PLC is exposed to RF energy, such as portable/mobile radios, may cause the power supply to shutdown when the radio is keyed. Specifically, we have observed radios operating in the 800 to 900 MHz range can cause this condition. Other frequencies may cause this condition as well where the field strength exceeds our specification.
Resolution
Testing Conducted and Observations:
The field strength of the suspect radio was measured to be 59 V/m at 4cm from the antenna of the radio, 25 V/m at 1m from the antenna, and 11 V/m at 2m from the antenna. We design our systems to an IEC standard test rating specification of 10 V/m at the equipment under test. During the test with the radio, the RX3i power supply was unaffected by field strengths of 25 V/m or less, which is at least 2 1/2 times our design specification. At higher field strengths, the power factor correction circuit is affected, causing the power supply shutdown. For reference, the S90-30 AC power supply does not have this circuit, therefore they are not similarly affected. The tests were performed in a field strength chamber to insure consistent results.
Recommendations:
We suggest placing the Rx3i system in a metal enclosure if using the AC power supply under these conditions. The RX3i DC supply, which uses a different design, was tested and works well under the same conditions.
