The IC693BEM331 is a Genius Bus Controller from the Series 90-30 PLC System manufactured by GE Fanuc. This controller facilitates an interface for the serial bus of the Series 90-30 PLC and Genius I/O and is able to send and receive control data up to 128 bytes for a total of 31 devices on the Genius I/O bus. As a Genius bus controller, the IC693BEM331 requires input and output data lengths configuration suitable for the I/O device to ensure data is transferred. The IC693BEM331 GBC does not count fault table configuration errors that are featured in the 90-70 GBC. To check a Genius device’s configuration, the most efficient method is to verify that the corresponding GBC Device Present bit is set to 1.
Some of the uses for this Genius Bus Controller include: Genius blocks: Designed with the purpose of offering an interface for a great number of discrete, analog, specialized field devices. Important: Genius blocks cannot be controlled by GCM and GCM+ modules. Remote Drops: Series 90-70 I/O racks with bus interface through Remote I/O Scanner modules. Any combination of Series 90-70 discrete and analog I/O modules are compatible with these drops, offering up to 128 bytes of input and output data. Field Control I/O Station: Consisting of up to eight additional Field Control modules and a Bus Interface Unit (BIU). The BIU offers I/O scanning, intelligent processing, and feature configuration for the I/O station. Genius Hand-Held Monitors (HHM): Portable devices that can also be mounted permanently. These devices offer a comfortable operator interface for block setup, diagnostics, and data monitoring. Multiple hosts: For communications that use Global Data and datagrams.

90-30 Genius Configuration and Device Present Status Bits
Description
All Genius bus controllers (GBC) must be configured with input and output data lengths matching the I/O device or they will not transfer data. The 90-30 IC693BEM331 GBC lacks the fault table configuration errors of the 90-70 GBC. The quickest way to see if a Genius device is configured correctly is to check if the corresponding GBC Device Present bit is set to 1.
Resolution
The 90-30 GBC is configured with 32 %I status(Device Present) bits for serial bus addresses (SBA) 0 to 31 with the first bit for SBA 0, 2ndfor SBA 1, etc. These Device Present bits are set to 1 for each SBA that is correctly configured (correct data length) and is seen by the GBC during the last 3 token passes. The bit will be set to 0 for devices that are not configured correctly, turned off or not visible due to network problems.
You can determine the Device Present bit address by adding the SBA number to the status address. For example, if the VersaPro GBC Status Reference Type (or Status for LM90), is set to %I401, then %I403 will be 1 if a device at SBA 2 is on the network and properly configured. The bit for the GBC SBA, or Module SBA forLM90, is also set to 1 if the top LED on the GBC is on. In the example, if the GBC is at address 31, the %I432 bit should always be on.
Genius blocks is configured as Input only, Output only or Combo (output with feedback) using the Genius Hand Held Monitor. The Device Type in VersaPro and LM90 must match that configured in the block. Select the %I type for Input, %Q for output or %IQ for combined Input/Output. If the type and length are wrong, the Device Present bit will not turn on. For example, you would select Device Type16%IQ for a 16 circuit block set for Combo. This configures the PLC GBC to transfer 16 %I and 16 %Q bits both starting at the same address.
Differences Between 90-30 GBC and RX3i GBC
Description
What is the difference between a 90-30 GBC (IC693BEM331) vs a RX3i GBC (IC694BEM331)?
Resolution
The IC693BEM331 and IC694BEM331 modules are functionally identical and can be used interchangeably in a Series 90-30 and a PACSystems RX3i rack systems. The differences are the following:
The OK LED on IC693BEM331 Blinking in 90-30 System
Description
The Discrete Mixed modules are configured in a remote GBI station and need to communicate with IC693BEM331 in 90-30 system. For these Discrete Mixed modules, like IC200MDD840, IC200MDD841 and IC200MDD843, they all provide IO data length not in a byte-aligned format. When customer configured the data length in IC693BEM331 to match the length provided by the Discrete Mixed modules in 9030 system, the OK LED on IC693BEM331 will blink after downloading the project and running the CPU. This GBI station could not communicate with GBC.
Resolution
In Genius Bus data transmission, the basic unit is byte format. That means, for the discrete mixed modules with non-byte aligned data length, it should be configured in byte-aligned length. For example, if the IC200MDD843 is configured in one of the GBI station, it has 10 DI and 6 DO. In the settings of GBC global data, it should be configured as %I*16 and %Q*8. The next IO module in GBI station will start from %I17 and %Q9.
Note, in RX3i system, no matter IC693BEM331 or IC694BEM331 is installed, during the configuration, if the data is not in byte-aligned format, the length will indicate that in red font and change automatically for byte unit.
