Product Description

Made by GE Automation and Controls, the IC697CPU780 is a single-slot PLC CPU capable of controlling machinery and processes in real-time.
Communication with I/O and “smart option” modules is accomplished via a rack-mounted connection backplane. To control and operate this PLC, use the built-in control switch or connect the device to a computer.

The IC697CPU780 has a 16MHz 80386DX microprocessor which can support floating point calculations every 0.4 microseconds. Up to 8K analog I/O is supported, along with various mixes of 12K inputs and outputs. This device supports several modules, including the following: IC697 LAN interface modules, bus controllers for IC660 and IC661, and discrete and analog IC697 I/O modules.

The IC697CPU780 also supports Hot Standby redundancy applications. A variety of redundancy features are also included such as CPU synchronization, “bumpless switching,” 20ms scan extension, and no single point of failure.

Up to 512 kilobytes of user and program memory is provided by an expansion board. Memory is maintained by a CMOS battery. The memory expansion board also supports up to 256 kilobytes of flash memory (NVRAM). Error checking is provided by a checksum routine with parity detection.

The IC697CPU780 is configured by IC641 software running from an attached MS-DOS programmer computer. There are no DIP switches or jumpers required to program this device. To connect the device to the programmer computer, use either a serial or parallel connection. To protect configuration settings, use either the built-in memory protection switch or a software password.

Follow the guidelines in the product’s manual during installation. Disable power to the rack. Put the control switch into the stop position. Put the memory protection switch into the off position. Connect the memory board to the device. Put the CMOS battery into one of the on-board battery slots. Install the device into the first slot of the rack and enable power to the rack.

Description

The following description is in the IC697CPU780G PUN document

Resolution

Board versions R07 and earlier must be discarded when returned for repair, since the version of the SBS used in these earlier versions is no longer available. Modules with board versions R08 must be returned to be upgraded to R10, per the modification instructions.

CPU780-G has circuit board version R10

CPU780-F has circuit board version R08

CPU780-E has circuit board version R07

So, CPU780-F can be upgraded directly, and CPU780-E and earlier version is not upgraded directly to CPU780-G.

Customer Questions and Answers

  • Question:  What is an IC697CPU780?  Answer:  The IC697CPU780 is a 16 MHz, 32-Bit, Floating Point, Expandable Central Processing Unit for Hot Standby CPU Applications from the GE Fanuc 90-70 Series.
  • Question:  What will I need to test my IC697CPU780?   Answer:  You will need your IC697CPU780, a slot rack, and a power supply.
  • Question:  If the top LED is not on or is blinking when I test my processor- What does that mean?  Answer:  It means you definitely have something wrong with your processor.
  • Question:  How do I test the port that is on IC697CPU780?  Answer:  Go into Proficy Machine Edition, clear the controller fault table and/or the I/O fault table- nothing else. Then, click download and run. You want to download hardware, configuration, and logic. The only thing you are trying to do is get the processor into run mode.
  • Question:  What does each LED indicate?  Answer:  The top LED is the OK LED, the middle LED is the run enabled LED, and the bottom LED is the I/O enabled LED.
  • Question:  What else should I test on IC697CPU780?  Answer:  You should test the toggle switch (that is under the LEDs). This toggle switch turns off the LEDs and you should simply make sure it works by flipping it on and off.
  • Question:  What if I think there is a problem with my processor?  Answer:  You should leave it in run mode over night or over a weekend to check and see if it will stay in run mode.
  • Question:  What if my IC697CPU780 won't stay in run mode?  Answer:  Then your IC697CPU780 may need to be repaired
